Embedded Engineers as External Team Augmentation
Senior embedded engineers who get up to speed in your codebase quickly and take real ownership inside your team – for project peaks or a longer-term engagement, remote or on-site. You keep the roadmap and the steering; we add capacity and deep experience across C++, Qt/QML, Embedded Linux and Yocto. It's how you close capacity and niche-skill gaps without months of hiring, and without handing your project to an outside black box.
What is external team augmentation for embedded projects?
Team augmentation means that experienced embedded engineers join your existing team, your repositories and your processes – you keep the steering and the roadmap, we add capacity and experience.
That draws a clear line in two directions. Unlike a full project handover, we don’t take scope and delivery responsibility as an outside contract; we work under your technical lead on your backlog – in your tools, your CI and your standups. And unlike a job posting, you don’t hire a permanent employee or run a months-long recruiting process: you book exactly the capacity and niche skill you’re missing right now – scalable on demand, with clear ownership rather than plain staffing. Architecture, priorities and delivery stay in your hands; we fit into your way of working, not the other way around. The code is written in your repositories, to your standards and for your product – not in a walled-off external project.
When does augmenting your embedded team make sense?
Augmentation makes sense when a capacity or knowledge gap is slowing your project down but can’t be closed internally fast enough.
Typical triggers:
- Project peak and deadline pressure – a release or milestone is closer than the team can reach on its own
- Vacancy or hiring freeze – a key role is unfilled, new hires are frozen or take too long
- Missing niche knowledge – Yocto/BSP work, a Qt5→Qt6 migration or a board bring-up your team doesn’t do routinely
- Time-to-market under pressure – extra experienced hands shorten the path to a working product
- A second senior for reviews – someone who carries architecture and code reviews as a peer and takes load off the team
In these situations the fastest route is rarely a new hire, but experienced reinforcement that becomes productive immediately and absorbs the peak – without leaving you overstaffed afterwards.
Which embedded skills do we bring in?
We reinforce your team precisely where low-level software gets demanding – across the full embedded stack.
- Modern C++ – C++17/20/23, architecture and API design, performance optimisation, plus unit and integration testing
- Qt & QML – Qt Quick, HMI and interaction concepts, Qt for Embedded/EGLFS and migrations from Qt 5 to Qt 6
- Embedded Linux – board bring-up, device trees, kernel and driver adaptations, boot-time optimisation and low-level interfaces (CAN, I²C, SPI, UART)
- Yocto Project – custom layers and recipes, BSP maintenance, reproducible CI builds and OTA update strategies (for example with RAUC, SWUpdate or Mender)
This range is our core business, not a loose side offering. We deliberately plug in where our team has real depth, and we don’t promise breadth beyond it. You’ll find examples of the kind of projects this fits in our portfolio.
How does the collaboration work?
We get up to speed quickly and become part of your team – not an external black box alongside it.
- Kick-off & needs – we clarify the skill profile, scope, target dates and the technical setup
- Onboarding – access to repositories, CI and communication channels; we plug into your standups and review process
- Delivery with ownership – we take on tickets and ownership for well-scoped areas, in your workflow and to your standards
- Knowledge transfer – documentation, clean commits and pair programming keep the knowledge in your team, also after the engagement ends
The focus is deliberately on fast onboarding and on your team standing stronger afterwards than before. How quickly we can start depends on current availability and the profile you’re after – so reach out early. Whether the work happens remotely or on-site in the DACH region is your call: from Lörrach in the tri-border area we work in German and English.
Team augmentation or full project handover — which fits?
The rule of thumb: if you want to keep the steering and the roadmap, augmentation is right; if a well-defined result should be fully outsourced, a project or fixed-scope contract fits better.
- Team augmentation – your roadmap, your backlog, your processes; we add capacity and ownership inside the team
- Project or fixed-scope contract – we take on a defined scope together with delivery responsibility
If you’d rather hand off a clearly bounded initiative entirely, our other services and our technical consulting are the better home for it. Not sure which fits? We’ll frame it openly in an intro call and honestly recommend the model that suits your situation.
Frequently asked questions
- How quickly can you start?
- That depends on our current availability and the profile you need. Reach out early – in a short intro call we'll clarify availability, the required skills and a realistic start date.
- Do you work remotely or on-site?
- We work remote-first and on-site in the DACH region when needed. From Lörrach in the tri-border area we cover southern Germany plus neighbouring Switzerland and France well; collaboration is available in German and English.
- Who owns the code, and how is IP handled?
- We work inside your repositories, and the rights to the code we produce are set out contractually before the engagement starts. Handling of NDAs and secure access to your infrastructure is settled at the same time.
- Which contract model applies?
- Whether a service or a fixed-scope contract fits depends on the nature and extent of the collaboration. We agree the contract model and terms – including questions around false self-employment (Scheinselbstständigkeit) – individually and transparently with you.
